Honda Key Types

Transponder keys (roughly 1998–2015)

The classic Honda key with a thick black head. There is a chip inside that the immobilizer has to recognize. Cheap to duplicate when you have a working key, and one of the more straightforward programming jobs we do.

Remote head keys

The key and the remote buttons are moulded into one piece. Common on Accord and CR-V through the 2010s. When the buttons stop working but the car still starts, the remote side has failed while the chip is fine — sometimes worth replacing, sometimes not, and we will tell you which.

Smart keys / push-to-start

Standard across most of the current lineup. Proximity fobs that stay in your pocket, with an emergency blade hidden in the body. Longer to program than a transponder key but well within what we do on-site.

A Honda-specific note: on many Honda model years, adding a key requires the vehicle to already have at least one working key present during programming. If you are down to a single key, getting a spare cut now is dramatically simpler and cheaper than waiting until it is gone.

Lost Every Honda Key?

All-keys-lost on Honda is a job we handle. We connect to the vehicle, retrieve what we need from the VIN, cut a fresh blade, and program the new key or fob against the immobilizer without any original present.

It takes longer than a duplicate — budget an hour rather than twenty minutes — and it costs more. But it happens at your car, not at a dealership, and you are not paying to tow a vehicle that runs perfectly well.

Call with the year, model, and VIN. We confirm before dispatch that your specific Honda is one we can complete rather than turning up and guessing.

Honda Key Replacement in Albuquerque, NM FAQs

Can you make a Honda key with no original?

Yes. We handle all-keys-lost Honda jobs on-site by connecting to the vehicle and pulling the key data from the VIN, then cutting and programming a fresh key or smart fob. Expect it to take around an hour and cost more than a straight duplicate, but there is no tow and no dealer visit.

Why does my Honda key turn the ignition but not start the engine?

The blade was cut correctly but the transponder chip was never programmed to your car. Honda immobilizers will let the key physically turn while refusing to allow the engine to fire. It needs programming, which is a separate step from cutting and requires diagnostic equipment.

Do you work on Acura?

Yes. Acura is Honda luxury division and shares the same immobilizer platforms, so MDX, RDX, TLX, and ILX are covered with the same equipment and procedures.

My Honda remote buttons died but the car starts fine. What now?

That means the remote half of the key has failed while the transponder chip is still working. Try a fresh coin-cell battery first, since that resolves it more often than people expect. If a new battery does not bring the range back, the remote board or button contacts have worn out and the key head needs replacing.

How much does a Honda key cost in Albuquerque?

Transponder keys are the least expensive Honda key we cut, and smart fobs cost more. An all-keys-lost job costs more than a straight duplicate because of the extra time and equipment involved. You get a firm quote on the phone before anyone is dispatched.
